The Drone Racing Club here in ATL hosts workshops on occasion and races every 2 Saturdays.  They are looking to make this a sport for kids like football…  Great group of people earnest to teach kids how to build and fly FPV!

Fly First on a Simulator https://learnaero.space/start-flying-first-on-a-simulator/ Sun, 29 May 2016 19:14:49 +0000 http://learnaero.space/?p=176 If you are going to get into RC flying I HIGHLY RECOMMEND that you first learn how to fly using a simulator!  This can be tons of fun, and save quite a bit of broken plane parts and dollars before flying the real things.  The one we use and is most recommended by hobbyists is RealFlight 7.5 which comes with a real transmitter to learn how to use the “sticks”.   You can also link up most pro transmitters to practice on your own “sticks” – getting the feel of the transmitter you will use in the field and learning your various settings.  RealFlight 7.5 includes all types of flying, from fixed wing to multi-rotor.

Flying multi-rotor?  Some of the experts like to step out of the RealFlight box and use some of the other simulators out there (Real Flight does have a drone simulator in addition to their other offerings).  Some great multi-rotor options the pros like include:

  • LIFTOFF – for great graphics and great FPV training on the STEAM platform
  • FPV Freerider – supports FPV and LOS (line of sight)
  • Heli-X – offers lots of great options and multi-player flying

So, how to get started?  You can search for all kinds of tutorials on how to learn to fly RC.  Check out this great step-by-step tutorial for learning multi-rotors using Freerider by Joshua Bardwell.

Remember – if you’re not crashing you’re not flying!

Find a Local AMA Chapter https://learnaero.space/find-a-local-ama-chapter/ Sat, 28 May 2016 02:10:46 +0000 http://learnaero.space/?p=168 Find a great AMA chapter near you to either get out and fly or meet new people who can help you get there.  Search for a club on the AMA’s website!

Why bother finding a local club after joining as a member, you ask?  For many reasons, some of which include:  finding a mentor to help you learn, join a community that loves to welcome new and experienced to the hobby, fly in a safe place, see what others are flying and learning about that you haven’t seen yet!

Join the AMA! https://learnaero.space/join-the-ama/ Sat, 28 May 2016 02:02:11 +0000 http://learnaero.space/?p=166 Would you like to, or have you already started flying RC (remote control)?  This is a great, fun way to experience the joy of flying!  It is also a great way to learn many skills including building, engineering, technology, coding, circuitry, art and design, planning, and more!

RC flying is something all ages can enjoy, and just like full scale flying there are so many different areas to get into with different types of aircraft and different types of flying.  Below are some important areas to consider, groups to join and other resources for this exciting area!

Join the Academy of Model Aeronautics  If you and/or your child are interested in flying anything RC or would like to get more education and read about exciting things in this field I highly recommend joining the Academy of Model Aeronautics.

Youth memberships are free, and adults are on a yearly or lifetime basis.  You can subscribe to their great publications and utilize free education on the website.  They host a ton of events and with your membership you can get free or discounted admission to all kinds of aviation related events.  Most importantly, members are covered under the AMA insurance policy when flying AVs in accordance to the guidelines!  Many places will not let you fly without a membership and this insurance.
